Our Inclusive Curriculum
The main aim of inclusive education provision in the school is to ensure that all our pupils reach their potential within a supportive environment. As a school considering our ALN provision and how we will meet the needs of different groups of learners and respond to the new ALN code.
The Four Purposes
The four purposes are a shared vision, and this is the aspiration for every child and young person. In realising these, we set high expectations for all, promote personal and national well-being, challenge ignorance and misinformation, and encourage learners to play their part as alert and critical citizens. Our school aims to support pupils to become:
Statements of what matters
Curriculum content must link back to the statements of what matters. This helps learners make sense of everything they are learning throughout the learning continuum. Our curriculum will provide rich experiences to develop the key concepts, knowledge and skills identified in the statements of what matters.
Areas of Learning and Experience (MDaPh)
Learning will be based on 6 areas of learning and experience rather than using subjects as it has been in the past. Within these areas there are statements of what is important. These statements identify the most important knowledge, skills and experiences to develop.
Ysgol Bro Teifi's curriculum will provide learning and enriching experiences through the following six Learning and Experience Areas:
Languages, Literacy and Communication
Expressive Arts
Science and Technology
Humanities
Mathematics and Numeracy
Health and Wellbeing
UNCRC / UNCRCA Human Rights
At Bro Teifi we will promote knowledge and understanding of Part 1 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, and the United convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, among those providing learning and teaching.
Education careers and experiences related to the world of work
We will ensure rich experiences for pupils and incorporate careers and work-related experiences for all our learners.
Relationship and sexuality education (RSE)
As a school we will cover the ACRH guidance and the RSE Code. In order to realise the requirements of the Four Purposes the provision of RSE will have a positive and empowering role in the education of our learners in the Vale of Teifi. As a school we will help and support pupils to form and maintain a range of relationships that will be based on trust and respect. These requirements prioritise the development of our pupils' emotional wellbeing, resilience and empathy.
Guidance on Religion, Values and Ethics
As a result of the new curriculum the guidance on Religion, Values and Ethics is mandatory for all learners from 3 to 16 years of age, and one of the mandated requirements. Parents are no longer allowed to exclude their children from the Guidance on Religion, Values and Ethics in the Welsh Curriculum. Within the local authority an agreed syllabus will set out what should be taught within the Guidance on Religion, Values and Ethics, and we will reflect this guidance within our curriculum.
Review and refinement
The new Curriculum at Ysgol Bro Teifi will be continually reviewed to ensure it is inclusive, responsive and meets the needs of all learners. We will ensure an up-to-date Curriculum that meets the needs of the pupils, the needs of the local society as well as the findings of professional inquiry. We will undertake constant reviews and discussions to consider the views of pupils and stakeholders to ensure a curriculum that continues to develop.
Learning, Progression, Progress and Assessment
In designing learning opportunities our curriculum will use pedagogical principles as a sound basis.
Progress in learning is how a learner develops and improves their skills and knowledge over time. This means increasing the breadth and depth of their knowledge, deepening their understanding, and honing their skills, all while becoming more independent and applying their learning to new situations. The interrelationship between curriculum, assessment and pedagogy is, therefore, key to supporting learners to make meaningful progress in their learning. When planning and delivering learner experiences, practitioners will be aware of how they contribute to a learner's overall journey along the 3 to 16 year old continuum, with the pace of that progress driven by the reference points identified in learning. Schools and settings will need to work together as they develop a shared understanding of progress within the Curriculum for Wales. Assessment will be an integral part of learning and teaching, and all learners will be assessed when starting their journey at the School.
English and Welsh
The Welsh language is the main medium of all life and work of Ysgol Bro Teifi with the aim of ensuring that all pupils are thoroughly able to the best of their ability / ability by the time they leave school. English is introduced to pupils at the age of seven.
Cross-Curricular Skills
Within the curriculum learners will develop the mandated cross-curricular skills of literacy, numeracy and digital competence. By developing these cross-curricular skills it will enable our learners to extend them and apply across all Areas of Learning and Experience. Across the Curriculum there will be opportunities for pupils:
Develop listening, reading, speaking writing skills.
Using numbers and solving problems in real life situations.
Be confident users of a range of technologies to help them operate and communicate effectively and make sense of the world.
